CY15 proved to be a depressing year for Karachi Stock Exchange as the benchmark KSE-100 index posted just 2.2% YoY growth during the year with dull volumes. The benchmark KSE-100 index ended the year at 32,816.31 points. Though market witnessed some good bullish spells during the year mainly on back of; cut in discount rates, upgrade of ratings by international rating agencies, and attractive prices due to which the benchmark index touched an all-time high of 36,229 points. However, gains were wiped off due to multiple factors which include; falling international commodity prices, bearish trend in global capital markets, selling by foreign investors, weak earnings growth, uncertainty on the political front, and issues between brokers and apex regulator.
(2016) A Challenging Year Ahead,
On the positive side in 2016 we might see recovery in oil prices, better corporate results (excluding E&P), possible inclusion in MSCI emerging market and completion of mega projects under CPEC arrangements would be key triggers. Furthermore, Pakistan Stock Exchange will be launched in January, 2016 where three stock exchanges in Pakistan are being integrated into a single national stock exchange.

Zafar Stocks PSX 100 Index (Zafar Securities Pvt Ltd)
The 100 index started the day on a bullish note, clocking in a high of 32,961.78 (+149.89) but eventually closed on a reactive note at 32,825.03 marginally up by 13.14 points (0.04%). Market participation declined to 79mn from 144mn in the previous session.
Major gains to the 100 index came on the back of MARI, HUBC, OGDC and GHNI. On the laggard side of the day PAEL, POL, SEARL and JSCL .
From technical perspective, despite moving past 20EMA the 100 index retraced its footsteps after hitting the declining trend line and towards the end closed below the said average, signifying a risk averse behavior from traders point of view. We recommend sticking to sidelines and avoid being entangled in choppy trades. Unless index closes above 33,000 levels .

Zafar Stocks PSX 100 Index (Zafar Securities Pvt Ltd)
This year the 100 index has been going up and down with no commitment to a move in any particular direction, making it safe to assume that in a nutshell the market performed sideways. Today’s move was also a part of that bigger picture. Towards the end the 100 index managed to close up 173.29 points (+0.53%) at 32,674.
E&P retraced intraday gains following more than 2% decline in international crude oil prices from its close at USD38.10 before the weekend
Market participants also rejoiced PM Nawaz Sahrif’s announcement that Pakistan will cut power tariff for factories by PkR 3/Unit. FFC staged a decent comeback after a disappointing outgoing week and contributed 69 points to today’s gains.
We remain skeptical with respect to potential sustainability of today’s gains. We recommend sticking to sidelines till some direction is in sight.
